2010 Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl


The St. Petersburg Bowl officially became the Beef 'O’ Brady’s Bowl. The game also moved to Tuesday night with 20,017 in attendance.

photo The University of Louisville (6-6, 4-3) represented the Big East Conference. The Cardinals had not been to a bowl since the 2006 season and went 6-7-1 in the school’s fourteen previous bowl appearances. Charlie Strong was in his first year as head coach at Louisville.

Southern Mississippi (8-4, 5-3) represented Conference USA. For the Golden Eagles, it was the school’s tenth straight bowl game and 22nd overall with a 10-11 record.

Austin Davis threw a touchdown pass and Desmond Johnson ran for a score and Southern Miss jumped to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter. Louisville would battle back and the game was tied 21-21 at the half. After a scoreless third quarter, Davis threw a second scoring pass, however, game MVP Jeremy Wright returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for a TD. A Chris Philpott gave the Cardinals a 31-28 victory.

Louisville head coach Charlie Strong said, “Nobody ever gave us a chance. And to watch this football team fight through so much adversity, go work so hard, develop trust, develop commitment— that’s what it’s all about, getting a foundation within this program.” USM head coach Larry Fedora commented, “Definitely a very tough loss for our football team.”
