2010 Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl
The University of Louisville (6-6, 4-3) represented the Big East Conference. The Cardinals had not been to a bowl since the 2006 season and went 6-7-1 in the school’s fourteen previous bowl appearances. Charlie Strong was in his first year as head coach at Louisville.
Southern Mississippi (8-4, 5-3) represented Conference USA. For the Golden Eagles, it was the school’s tenth straight bowl game and 22nd overall with a 10-11 record.
Austin Davis threw a touchdown pass and Desmond Johnson ran for a score and Southern Miss jumped to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter. Louisville would battle back and the game was tied 21-21 at the half. After a scoreless third quarter, Davis threw a second scoring pass, however, game MVP Jeremy Wright returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for a TD. A Chris Philpott gave the Cardinals a 31-28 victory.
Louisville head coach Charlie Strong said, “Nobody ever gave us a chance. And to watch this football team fight through so much adversity, go work so hard, develop trust, develop commitment— that’s what it’s all about, getting a foundation within this program.” USM head coach Larry Fedora commented, “Definitely a very tough loss for our football team.”
